This illustration project was a group project, exploring different roles as a group in order to create a successful outcome. We were given a poem book by Hilaire Belloc called the 'Cautionary Tales for children', which tells stories of children doing silly things and living with the consequences of their action.
In this project I took on the role as illustrator, set with tasks and deadlines to produces outcomes for each story.
This is the front and back cover of the book, the concept behind story is all the children are from the same world. We gave each child a house and a colour scheme and as each story gets told the concept is reflected on the house. So when the story end the house is destroyed, creating more chaos until eventually everything is destroyed.
Here are my initial sketches for my idea development for my favourite stories. They involve rough ideas and some colour swatches to highlight my ideas and how I could further evolve them.
Furthermore each chapter begins with the house door of the story to create some interaction between the viewer and story. The idea is as you turn the page with the door your entering the house of the child and experiencing their story.
After each story the reflection of their adventure is reflected on the house, this image will go next to the door of the next story to reiterate chaos.
These are the characters of the stories. They we edited into their chapter page to give the reader some context to the character of the story. They are posed in silly postions to reflected their characters.
Below are some of my favourite pages from the book.
